What Gantt planning means for a construction project
A Gantt chart is a timeline view of every task in your build, drawn as horizontal bars against a calendar. In SiteBoard, each bar carries its own duration, its dependencies on other tasks, and a fill that shows how much of the work is actually done. Instead of a static list of dates, you get a living model of the project: move one task and everything that depends on it shifts with it, so you can see the knock-on effect of a delay before you commit to it.
How you build a plan
Start by breaking the project into phases — foundation, structure, MEP, finishing — then add the tasks under each, indented like a real work breakdown structure. Drag the bars to set start and finish dates, link the tasks that depend on each other, and drop milestone diamonds on the dates that matter, like inspections or handover. A typical residential schedule takes an afternoon to set up; after that, it maintains itself as your crew reports progress.
Who it is for
Gantt planning is the daily tool for the person who owns the schedule — the project manager or the contractor running the job. They plan on a laptop, while foremen update from their phones. The two views stay in sync: the foreman never has to read a Gantt, and the planner never has to chase a status update.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need scheduling experience to use it?
No. If you can list the tasks in your build and roughly how long each takes, you can lay out a working plan. Dependencies and the critical path are optional refinements you can add later.
Can I import an existing Excel schedule?
You can recreate a plan in minutes by adding phases and tasks directly. Spreadsheet import is on the roadmap; today most teams start fresh because the setup is fast.
What happens when a task runs late?
Drag the bar to its new dates, or update its % complete from the field. Any linked tasks shift automatically, so the rest of the schedule reflects reality instead of the original wish.
